Welcome to the web site of the Pennsylvania Postal History Society

Mission of PaPHS

PaPHS is a non-profit, educational membership organization founded in 1974. It has as its primary purpose the cultivation and promotion of the study of the postal history of Pennsylvania.
PaPHS encourages the acquisition and preservation of the material (generally, covers or folded letters) relevant and necessary to the study and understanding of such postal history. To that end, PaPHS supports the publication of original research in respect of such knowledge for the benefit of its members and the general public.

Services Offered By PaPHS

  • PaPHS publishes a quarterly journal (in February, May, August and November) called The Pennsylvania Postal Historian. The current issue is Whole No. 181 (November 2009). To see examples of the type of articles typically published in the Historian, look at (i) the cover pages of some recent issues from the past several years, and (ii) sample articles.
  • The 2010 Annual Meeting will be held on April 10, 2010 in conjunction with PNSE 2010 at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, 100 Station Avenue, Oaks, PA. For more information see: PNSE Information The purpose of the annual meeting will be to elect directors and officers of PaPHS and to conduct such other business as might be appropriate. For information look at About PaPHS.
  • In addition to publishing the Historian each quarter, PaPHS has contributed to the authoring of several books and monographs by its members. Thus, members John Kay and Chet Smith have researched and published Pennsylvania Postal History; members Thomas Mazza and Robert Leberman researched and published the monograph Postal Markings on Stampless Mail from Warren County, Pennsylvania; and, Thomas Mazza has researched and published Postal Markings on Stampless Mail from Erie County.

Three members, with the contributions of information from several other members, currently are compiling for publication by PaPHS catalogs of the postal markings of Lebanon County and Lancaster County.
